The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona participates these days in Switzerland as a speaker at the 9th ICOYC European and South American Conference, the forum that members of the prestigious ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs) held biannually in different European countries.

The club's commodore, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, and the manager, Tatiana Arias, were in charge of presenting the work carried out by Monte Real with the J80 fleet this Thursday to the participants in the event, which is being held until Saturday in the Swiss city of Gstaad.

They explained how 10 years ago the club decided to go for this type of 8-meter monotype because they understood that it was a more economical, safe, fun and technical boat, easier to handle for beginners and ideal for professionals to improve their skills.

They also told how in a decade of work they managed to increase the number of units considerably, going from zero to more than twenty; specific competitions were created for the J80s and their own categories for this fleet were included in the club's most important trophies.

And they finished narrating how the initiatives put in place and the great evolution registered allowed them to organize, in the last years, two Spanish Championships of the class; and to be chosen, in this 2023, to celebrate the J80 World Championship, becoming the first club in Galicia to achieve this milestone.

Another of the topics addressed in this biannual congress was the operation of the Club's Adapted Sailing School, in which people with functional diversity sail throughout the year in adapted boats and with specialized trainers.
