Armed by the Cantabrian Daniel de la Pedraja and skippered by the Canarian Javier Padrón, Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods was proclaimed winner of the J80 World Championship in Baiona this Saturday.

The second place was occupied by the Galician Marnatura with Luis Bugallo from Vigo at the controls and third was the Cantabrian Solintal of Ignacio Camino.

By categories, Dorsia Covirán was the winner in the Mixed class, Team Balearia in the Women's class, the French Telesto Ecole Navale in the Youth class, Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 in the Corinthian class and Mercury Avator in the Master class.

Monte Real Yacht Club de Yates put the finishing touch to the big event of the season with the awards ceremony and a fireworks display in the club's gardens this Saturday

The J80 World Championship Baiona 2023, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade, ended in the Rías Baixas, with more than 400 sailors of 43 nationalities. An event that came to Galicia for the first time and in which the Cantabrian-Canarian team Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods won the coveted intercontinental title.

Everything pointed to the fact that the final day would once again be very complicated in terms of weather conditions. The race committee tried until the end, even going so far as to initiate the procedure for a final race on the Cies Islands race course. The wind, however, did not facilitate the competition on Saturday and the World Championship ended at four o'clock in the afternoon without being able to complete the last races of the program.

The provisional results therefore became definitive and Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods, which competed under the banners of the Reales Clubes Marítimo de Santander and Náutico de Gran Canaria with Javier Padrón at the helm, was definitively proclaimed J80 world champion in Baiona.

"The truth is that we are very happy with the victory. We have been working very hard all week and the result is the culmination of a week well done. The crew has worked incredibly hard, super focused on each race and when things are hard it seems that victory tastes better," said Padrón and added: "The organization has put a lot of effort on the water with a very high quality team and this has been noticed in the regatta.

Armed by Daniel de la Pedraja and with a crew formed by two Canary Islanders (Javier and Alberto Padrón), two Cantabrians (Jon Larrazabal and Lucía González) and one Galician (Eduardo Reguera), the team went from strength to strength from the first day of the World Championship, adding up a total of four partial victories and two second places in the eight races completed, thus achieving a wide advantage of 22 points over the second classified.

Behind, the intercontinental silver was awarded to the Galician boat built by José Luis Freire. The Marnatura (MRCYB), with Luis Bugallo from Vigo at the helm, started off in a discreet way and it was with the passing of the days when it began to make a comeback to definitively place itself on the second step of the podium.

"We are very happy with how the regatta went, the truth is that it was totally unexpected for us to have such a good result. José Luis Freire, `Tibu', put all his heart and soul into this magnificent project and without a doubt we are very grateful," said Bugallo.

The third position was finally occupied by the Cantabrian Solintal (RCM Santander), armed and skippered by Ignacio Camino. The team, which came to lead the generation after the dispute of the first two qualifying days, was responsible for closing a very tight podium that underwent constant changes during the competition.

In Camino's words, "we value the result very positively, because it has been a very complicated championship in terms of conditions and there has been a very high level of competitors. It has been a very open World Championship, except for the winner who has had it easier because of the results, but we are very happy in general terms because our main objective was to get on the podium".

In addition to the title in the absolute overall, the J80 World Championship was also at stake for five other categories that this Saturday proclaimed their new winners: Miguel Fernández's (RCN Coruña) Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 in Corinthian, Nuria Sánchez's Dorsia Covirán in Mixed, María Bover's Team Balearia (RCN Palma) in Women, Paul Louseau's French Telesto Ecole Navale in Youth; and Jaime Piris' (RCM Santander) Cantabrian Mercury Avator in Masters.

Once the competition was over, the trophy ceremony was held in the gardens of Monte Real. The event, which was chaired by José Luis Álvarez, president of the host club, was also attended by Xosé Manuel Merelles, director of Tourism of Galicia; José Manuel Heredia, president of Galicia Calidade; Jesús Vázquez Almuiña, mayor of Baiona; Marta Fernández Tapias, vice-president of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra; Inés González Megido, head of marine and fishing of Repsol; and Alejandro Retolaza, vice-president of Monte Real.

As a final touch to the great event of the season in Galicia, sailors, skippers and owners gathered for the last time in the village of Monte Real to enjoy a fireworks display and tastings of the best Galician products, one more day by Galicia Calidade.

The World J80 Baiona 2023 was held under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade. The competition also had the collaboration of Deporte Galego, Diputación de Pontevedra, Repsol, Concello de Baiona, Terras Gauda and Gestilar.

ABSOLUTE LEADER

EUROFRITS & AVIKO / NEWINDFOODS - Javier Padrón - RCM Santander / RCNGC

"What has made the difference has been the work of the crew, which has been constant. We have not slacked off for a single minute and on the days with little wind, which have been the most complicated, we have managed to save the regatta. And perhaps that's where we have distanced ourselves from the competitors " - Javier Padrón - Eurofrits & Aviko /Newindfoods

MIXED LEADER

DORSIA COVIRÁN - José Manuel Ruiz - RCR Alicante

"For us it was just as important the absolute as the mixed category. We believe that the mixed category is a before and after in the monotype and in sailing and we have bet on it from the first minute. We were champions of Spain being mixed and we won the absolute, and here we came with the idea of being at the top and we are very happy with the results " - Nuria Sánchez - Dorsia Covirán

CORINTHIAN LEADER

KOTABLUE FIBRA CORUÑA 14/18 - Miguel Fernández - RCN A Coruña

"The team's euphoria is enormous. The truth is that when we started this project three years ago we did not consider the Corinthian, we were going for the absolute world championship and we came with possibilities and in the end we got this. We have a beautiful and exciting project for having done it with sailors from the club, with my students. Although in the end only three students were able to come, there were 32 sailors on the boat. This award is the perfect finishing touch" - Miguel Fernández Vasco - Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18

WOMEN LEADER

TEAM BALEARIA -RCNP - María Bover - RCN Palma

"The first day we started a little bit regular with an out of line but we got stronger throughout the days. MASTER LEADER

MERCURY AVATOR - Jaime Piris - RCM Santander

"The experience we have on board, with all the crew members over 60 years old, is very great. The Monte Real people have worked very hard and very well and I think they can be very proud " - Jaime Piris - Mercury Avator

The new J80 world champion will be decided this Saturday in Bayonne

After the dispute of a single race this Friday at the Cíes race course, the J80 World Championship organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade was ready for judgment.

With a 22-point lead, Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods prepares to defend the lead on Saturday on the final day and there will be a three-way battle for silver with only five points separating Marnatura (2nd), Solintal (3rd) and Dorsia Covirán (4th).

By categories, Dorsia Covirán continues to lead in the Mixed class, Team Balearia in the Women's class, the French Telesto Ecole Navale in Youth, Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 in Corinthian and Mercury Avator in Master.

Baiona, September 22, 2023.- After the penultimate day of competition in the Rías Baixas, Baiona will decide this Saturday the new world champion of the J80 class. The intercontinental event organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade completed this Friday an eighth leg of the championship that served to Javier Padrón's Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods to settle at the top of the provisional podium.

After two consecutive days of wind, waves and showers in the Rías Baixas, this Friday a light breeze returned to the anchorage of the Cíes Islands, which complicated the day for the race committee. Although the fleet cast off on time, the almost 80 participating teams had to wait several hours on the race course for Eolo to come to their rendezvous.

It was during this waiting time that the Baiona World Championship staff working on the organization's inflatable boats made the most beautiful story of the day when they rescued a small dolphin that was trapped in some nets. After one of the competition boats gave the alert signal, they managed to locate the dolphin to remove the rigging and release it back into the sea.

Finally it was around four o'clock in the afternoon when the committee could give the starting horn for a single race with very mild conditions and in which the teams had to do their best to fight for a partial victory that ended up being won by Peru Múgica's Etnia Barcelona.

The boat competing under the banner of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander was right in its strategy and was able to take the lead of the fleet almost from the beginning, crossing the finish line in first position just ahead of Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods skippered by Javier Padrón (RCM Santander/RCN Gran Canaria).

Behind, great day also for the Monte Real Club de Yates' Alboroto, which competes with Javier Aguado at the helm and this Friday scored its first partial podium of the championship with a hard-fought third place in the race.

With these results, the J80 World Championship in Baiona has been decided and it will be on Saturday when the new world champion of the class will be decided. The Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods of the owner Daniel de la Pedraja is the one that has more chances to win the final victory, and after the penultimate day the Cantabrian-Canarian team remains at the top of the table with a lead of 22 points over the second classified.

Behind, the second position is now occupied by Luis Bugallo's Marnatura (MRCYB), which with a seventh place in this last leg managed to climb one place in the overall ranking, and third is Ignacio Camino's Solintal (RCM Santander), two points behind the team of the skipper from Vigo.

The Alicante Dorsia Covirán of José Manuel Ruiz also has podium options, which although today dropped from second to fourth position is only three points behind the third classified.

By categories, the Dorsia Covirán armed by Nuria Sánchez continues to lead in the Mixed class, the Team Balearia of María Bover (RCN Palma) in the Women's class, the French Telesto Ecole Navale of Paul Louseau in Youth; the Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 of Miguel Fernández (RCN A Coruña) in Corinthian; and the Cantabrian Mercury Avator of Jaime Piris (RCM Santander) in Master.

After the competition, the activity moved to the village of Monte Real where this Friday the awards for the best boat of each of the four days disputed so far were presented by the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez, and the Secretary General for Sport, José Ramón Lete, to the best boat of each of the four days disputed so far.

The winners were Ignacio Camino's Solintal for the first day of classification, Javier Padrón's Eurofrits & Avico Newindfoods for the second, Miguel Fernández's Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 for the third and Peru Múgica's Etnia Barcelona for the fourth.

As every afternoon, sailors, owners and skippers enjoyed a new day of gastronomic tastings thanks to Galicia Calidade before the penultimate day of the Baiona World Championship came to an end.

Change of leader in the final stretch of the J80 World Championship in Baiona

After the first two days of the World Championship, dominated by Solintal, Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods is the new leader of the general standings

Great day for Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 from A Coruña, which gets back into the fight for the intercontinental podium after signing a second and a first place.

No changes in the categories: Dorsia Covirán leads the Mixed category; Marías Casas do Telhado the Corinthian category; Team Balearia the Women's category; Telesto Ecole Navale the Youth category; and Mercury Avator the Master's category.

Galicia and Cantabria, with three teams each in the top ten, continue to stand out in the event organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates.

Change of leader in the final stretch of the J80 World Championship in Baiona organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade. With the dispute of two new races in the race course of Cíes and the entry into play of a discard that allowed the crews to eliminate from the classification their worst result, the leadership of the intercontinental event passed this Thursday to the hands of Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods commanded by the canary Javier Padrón.

The fleet cast off on time to head for the race course. The first horn of the day was sounded after one o'clock in the afternoon with a northwesterly wind of about fifteen knots. The conditions were perfect until a change in the wind direction forced the committee to cancel the race in progress and reposition the course markers in order to restart the competition.

It was finally around a quarter to four in the afternoon when the wind, unstable until then, settled in a westerly direction with an average intensity of 12 knots, allowing the fleet to add two new partials in their lockers.

In the first race of the day, Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods led by Javier Padrón (RCM Santander/RCN Gran Canaria) and Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 of Miguel Fernández (RCN A Coruña) played an exciting head-to-head battle that ended with victory for the Cantabrian-Canarian team, while in the second race it was the team from A Coruña that took first place, climbing several places in the overall standings with its best day of the World Championship.

The results of Thursday's races and the entry into play of the discard caused a turnaround in the overall. At the top of the table and with a first and an eleventh, the Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods, armed by Daniel de la Pedraja, becomes the new leader of the classification. They dominate, moreover, with a lead of thirteen points over the second classified.

"We knew that with the discard, if we didn't have a puncture, we were in thegame", Javier Padrón began by saying after his return to the pontoons and added: "We have done two good races today and we are super happy, but also very concentrated because there are still two days left. We are going for everything, although we know that the races are very complicated and everyone can have a puncture, so trying to predict something is practically impossible, there is still a long way to go".

Behind there were no changes in the second and third places on the provisional podium, which continue to be occupied by the Dorsia Covirán skippered by José Manuel Ruiz (RCR Alicante) and Luis Bugallo's Marnatura (MRCYB) respectively.

As for the rest of the divisions that are playing the J80 World Championship in Bayonne, the five teams that were leading their respective classifications on Wednesday managed to maintain their positions on Thursday with Dorsia Covirán armed by Nuria Sanchez dominating in the Mixed class; María Bover's Team Balearia (RCN Palma) in the Women's class, which also got into the top 15 after this third qualifying day; Paul Louseau's French Telesto Ecole Navale in Youth; Manuel María Cunha's Marías Casas do Telhado (MRCY Baiona) in Corinthian; and Jaime Piris' Cantabrian Mercury Avator (RCM Santander) in Masters.

Late in the afternoon, as every day since the World Championship began in Baiona, the Monte Real village became the meeting point for the participants, who on this occasion enjoyed a fideuá with the best local products from Galicia Calidade.

The fleet will resume the competition on Friday with three races starting at one o'clock in the afternoon. Everything points to another exciting day, as the four teams behind the leader are separated by only nine points: Dorsia Covirán, second with 30 points; Marnatura, third with 34; Solintal, fourth with 35; and Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18, fifth with 39.

The Cantabrian and Galician fleets step on the accelerator in the J80 World Championship held in Baiona

Three crews from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander are among the first five classified and maintain the leadership of the competition with Ignacio Camino's Solintal in the lead.

Javier Padrón's Eurofrits & Aviko Newindfoods from Santander and Pichu Torcida's Fredo La Estrella del Norte occupy the fourth and fifth positions.

The Galician fleet proved to have taken the measures to the race course with four boats in the TOP 10: Luis Bugallo's Marnatura (3rd) and Manel María Cunha's Marías Casas do Telhado (8th), both from MRCYB; Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 (9th), from RCN A Coruña and Nepa Shipping (10th) from RCN Portosín.

The wind, from the south and with gusts that exceeded 20 knots, was the protagonist in this second qualifying day of the World Championship.

By categories, Dorsia Covirán leads the Mixed, Marías Casas do Telhado the Corinthian, Team Balearia the Women, Telesto Ecole Navale the Juvenile and Mercury Avator the Master.

Wind and spectacle in the Rías Baixas with the dispute of three new races of the J80 World Championship Baiona 2023. The fleet participating in the event organized by Monte Real with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade starred in an intense and tight day in which the teams from Galicia and Cantabria stood out among the nearly 80 boats that are playing for the intercontinental title.

With a strong wind forecast and expecting particularly tough conditions by mid-afternoon, the race committee decided to bring forward the starting gun by one hour for the first race on Wednesday, managing to complete the three scheduled races in just over four hours with gusts that exceeded 20 knots.

Ariane Mainemare, chief officer of the World Championship, explained at the end of the day that "we had to be very attentive to the weather that could be adverse because of the showers and could bring strong winds suddenly, so we had to be alert. Finally we had a nice day and the truth is that it is being a very interesting championship, the top 20 boats are very strong and I think it will remain so.

As on the opening day, regularity was again the key in an overall that did not stop changing after each race. The first to score a victory was José Luis Freire's Galician Marnatura (Monte Real Club de Yates), with Luis Bugallo from Vigo at the helm, who won brilliantly against the fleet of 77 boats competing in the Baiona World Championship.

The victory in this first round on Wednesday, in addition to the second and fifth places in the last two races of the day, allowed Bugallo's team to climb to the third step of the podium, thus keeping all options open for the next days of the World Championship.

"We are very happy with how the day went," said the Vigo skipper after returning to the pontoons. "We were able to meet our goal today of being in the top ten, so we're already looking forward to the three days ahead and giving it our all. There's a great level in the fleet and it's going to be very tight."

The Eurofrits & Avico Newindfood, competing under the Royal Maritime Clubs of Santander and Nautical Club of Gran Canaria with Javier Padron at the helm, was undoubtedly the best of this second qualifying day, adding a second in the first race of the day and two partial victories that allowed him to go up six positions in the overall and provisionally settle in fourth place just one point behind Marnatura and seven over the also from Santander Fredo La estrella del Norte of José María "Pichu" Torcida, which rises from eighth to fifth position.

At the top of the overall standings and after adding 6-7-4 on Wednesday, Ignacio Camino's Solintal (Real Club Marítimo de Santander) continues to lead for the second consecutive day. For Camino's crew, the regularity and the fact that they have remained in the leading positions in all the races has been the key to defend their position in the final stretch of the championship.

Ignacio Camino's Solintal is still in the lead - Photo Lalo R Villar

The second position, which until now was occupied by Miguel Fernández's Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 (Real Club Náutico de A Coruña), is now in the hands of Nuria Sánchez's Dorsia Covirán (Real Club de Regatas de Alicante). The boat skippered by José Manuel Ruiz also maintained consistency this Thursday with 8-4-3 results, which allowed the team to move up one place in the overall.

With these results and the first four boats separated by only seven points, the three days still to go and the entry into play of the discard from the sixth race could cause new changes in the overall, and everything points to the fact that the World Championship will not be decided until the final day.

Regarding the other five divisions that are also playing for the championship, Wednesday's day was also resolved with changes and two new leaders. In Corinthian, the first position is now in the hands of Manuel Maria Cunha's Marias Casas do Telhado (Monte Real Club de Yates), who with a third place in the first race of the day climbed back in the overall standings to place himself in the absolute top ten.

In the Women's category, great day for María Bover's Team Balearia (Real Club Náutico de Palma), which overtook Olatz Muñoz's Decoexsa (Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián) and takes the lead in the standings.

The Mixed, Youth and Master divisions continue to be led by Dorsia Covirán, Paul Loiseau's French Telesto Ecole Navale and Jaime Piris' Mercury Avator from Santander, respectively.

Once the competition was over, the activity moved to the Monte Real village, where one more day the sailors gathered to enjoy tastings offered by Galicia Calidade and a barbecue with live music.

On Thursday, the wind is expected to be slightly lighter in the Cíes area than on Wednesday and from the west, so everything points to the Committee being able to give the starting signal on time.

The J80 World Championship Baiona 2023 is organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade. The competition also has the collaboration of Deporte Galego, Diputación de Pontevedra, Repsol, Concello de Baiona, Terras Gauda and Gestilar.

RESULTS - J80 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BAIONA 2023

https://regatas.j80worldsbaiona2023.com/results/

The J80 fleet of the Baiona World Championship opens lockers with two races in the Cíes Islands

The dispute of the first two races was resolved with the Solintal of Ignacio Camino as the first leader of the overall absolute in the waters of the Rías Baixas.

Great performance of Miguel Fernández's Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18, which debuted this Tuesday on the second step of the podium with a crew formed by members of the racing team of the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña.

With four boats among the top ten classified, the Real Club Marítimo de Santander burst with force in the first qualifying day of the World Championship.

In the rest of the divisions, Decoexsa leads the female classification, Dorsia Covirán in mixed, Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 in Corinthian, French Telesto Ecole Navale in youth and Mercury Avator Jaime Piris in Master.

Great start of the J80 World Championship in the waters of the Rías Baixas. The intercontinental event organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia and Galicia Calidade inaugurated this Tuesday the markers for a fleet of 77 boats that could show off in the spectacular surroundings of the Cíes Islands, where the race course is located in which the coveted title is at stake.

Early in the morning, it seemed that the wind would not make things easy, and the race committee raised the postponement flag on shore to wait for the conditions to improve.

Finally, with a little more than two hours of delay on the scheduled time, the fleet was able to start the competition after three o'clock in the afternoon with a northwesterly wind of between six and eight knots of intensity, conditions that were maintained long enough to open the scoreboards with the dispute of two very tight races in which the regularity was key to define the first provisional podium.

The two victories were shared by Javier Padrón's Eurofrits & Aviko and Ignacio Camino's Solintal, both competing under the banner of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander. It was Camino's crew, however, who managed to become the first leaders of the World Championship by also finishing fourth and taking five points in the overall standings.

Behind, great initial performance of Miguel Fernández's Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 from A Coruña. With a crew made up exclusively of members of the racing team of the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, Fernández's crew took third and sixth place on Tuesday, putting them on the second step of the podium, one point ahead of their nearest rival.

The third position was occupied on this first day by the Dorsia Covirán skippered by José Manuel Ruiz, who made his debut in the Vigo estuary with two fifth places.

In addition to the absolute overall, the J80 World Championship Baiona 2023 also puts at stake the title in five other divisions that were also closed this Tuesday with the first provisional leaders: Olatz Muñoz's Decoexsa (RCN San Sebastián) in Women, Dorsia Covirán skippered by José Manuel Ruiz (RCR Alicante) in Mixed, Miguel Fernández's Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 in Corinthian (category in which non-professional crews score), Paul Loiseau's French Telesto Ecole Navale in Juvenile and Jaime Piris' Mercury Avator from Santander in Master (boats that have the skipper and at least two crew members over 60 years old).

With four days still to go and a discard pending to come into play when five of the fifteen scheduled races are completed, there is no doubt that anything can happen. Teams like Eurofriks & Avico from Padrón (with a 1-24 record), Alfredo González's Michelle from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín (2-39) or the locals Alboroto with Javier Aguado at the helm (26-2) and Alberto García's Solventis Ribadeo (76/UFD-3) could discard their worst record and get into the top of the table.

Once the day was over, the participants gathered again in the village of Monte Real, where on Tuesday they could enjoy a tasting of octopus and canned seafood and some of the best Galician products from Galicia Calidade.

For Wednesday, everything points to a strong wind blowing from the south, so the committee will probably be able to start the day on time at one o'clock in the afternoon.

A World Cup committed to the environment

After a test run at the Spring Regatta held last April, the Monte Real made its debut this Tuesday in competition with a new Repsol fuel, 100% renewable and with zero emissions. The club's support boats took to the water with this fuel made from waste, with which the energy company seeks to reduce its carbon footprint. "This fuel makes the support boats completely sustainable and we help reduce the carbon footprint and set a precedent for competitions to be increasingly respectful," said Inés González, Repsol's head of marine and fishing.

It is the most awaited event of the season. And also the most international. With almost 80 registered teams and sailors from more than 40 nationalities, the J80 World Championship will turn Baiona into the international sailing capital during this week, as teams representing countries such as India, with four registered teams, or the United States with two, have arrived in the fishing village.

The practice race and the opening ceremony served as a perfect dress rehearsal for the event that kicks off this Tuesday.

David Rogers, crew member of the American Underdog, said, "Today was our first time sailing here and we really enjoyed it. We're excited about the week ahead and we're really pleased to be here. The place is beautiful, the accommodation is fantastic, the people are very welcoming and the club has welcomed us and treated us very well."

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Axencia de Turismo de Galicia, the Monte Real Club de Yates has been thoroughly prepared to host a very heterogeneous fleet. As the club's commodore, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, states, this World Championship "is something we have been pursuing for years. The club is betting on these monotypes, which are very well received worldwide and mainly at European and American level, and the area, Galicia and the Rías Baixas area are also very popular for racing".

This Monday, with only twenty-four hours to go before the action begins, the club and the pontoons experienced an intense first day with nearly 400 sailors preparing to start the fight for the intercontinental title.

Many start out as favorites. Few dare to name names of possible winners, although among the most talked about is the Spanish fleet with teams such as the five times world champion Hotel Princesa Yaiza, of the Canary Islander Rayco Tabares (RCN Arrecife), the Solintal of Ignacio Camino and the Fredo La Estrella Norte of José María "Pichu" Torcida; Ignacio Camino's Solintal and José María "Pichu" Torcida's Fredo La Estrella del Norte, both competing under the banner of the second most represented club after Monte Real, the Real Club Marítimo de Santander; Nuria Sánchez's Dorsia (RCR Alicante); and the local Okofen of Javier de la Gándara and Alboroto, helmed by Juan Carlos Ameneiro.

First contact in the Rías Baixas and opening ceremony

As scheduled in the program, this Monday the fleet made its debut in the Rías Baixas with the practice race. The wind, which presented very good conditions after the passage of the squall on Sunday, allowed the fleet to complete a race in which the teams could measure themselves for the first time in the Rías Baixas.

Once ashore, at eight o'clock in the evening, the opening ceremony took place in the village of the Baiona club in front of hundreds of people including sailors, companions, members of the organization and authorities. The event was chaired by José Luis Álvarez, president of Monte Real, and was also attended by Armando Gutiérrez, president of the J80 Spain class, and Jesús Vázquez Almuiña, mayor of Baiona.

Monday's event also marked the start of another of the great attractions of the World Cup. From the hand of Galicia Calidade, those attending the inauguration could enjoy tastings of some of the best products of the land between ham, pies, omelets and a variety of cheeses with Designation of Origin San Simon, Arzúa Ulloa, O Cebreiro and Tetilla, all accompanied by Estrella Galicia beers, wines from Bodegas Terras Gauda and Cabreiroá waters.

So, with everything ready to start, this Tuesday the competition will begin with the first round on the race course and three races of the fifteen scheduled until next Saturday. The Committee will try to give the starting horn for the first one at one o'clock in the afternoon, although everything will depend on the weather forecast that predicts light winds from the northwest from noon onwards.

Everything ready for the most awaited World Cup

After the measurement days, the J80 fleet is already preparing to make a first reading of the race course this Monday with the practice race.

"It's been years since Baiona has hosted a World Cup and the whole team is already looking forward to it," says Roy Alonso, sports director of Monte Real.

"Icould not list the favorites for the title today. There will be many teams fighting to win and our goal is to try to be one of them"- Rayco Tabares, skipper of the Hotel Princesa Yaiza and winner of five world championships.

Everything is ready to start the J80 World Championship organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the sponsorship of Turismo de Galicia. A few hours before the first day of competition, the Monte Real Yacht Club worked this weekend at a frantic pace to finalize preparations for the big event of the season in Galicia.

Committees, regatta office, sailors and the entire organizational team of the club have worked hard in recent weeks to make possible an event that will bring together during this week in Baiona about 80 teams with 400 sailors from 43 nationalities, representing the five continents. A real organizational challenge for the club, which is already counting down the hours until the start of the competition. " It's been years since Baiona has prepared a World Championship and I think the whole team is eager for it to start and to develop well," said Roy Alonso, sports director of Monte Real.

"The preparations are very intense, especially in the final sprint. From the club's own team of workers to the national and international committees, all have been involved in the organization over the last few days. We are quite a big team, because in the end between the sailors, the office and all the technicians who are working day by day we will be between fifteen and twenty people, and once the World Championship starts we will be more than 40 working exclusively for the regatta," adds Alonso.

For their part, the crews have also prepared thoroughly during the last few days and the atmosphere of competition is already palpable on the pontoons of Monte Real. During this weekend each and every one of the teams completed the last formalities prior to the start of the World Championship and rushed the last hours to have everything ready to fight for the most important title of the season. A title that, undoubtedly, will be more than disputed.

"I couldn't list the favorites for the title today, because I think the fleet is very strong and there are many boats with options," says Rayco Tabares, skipper of the Canary Islands' Hotel Princesa Yaiza.

With five world titles behind them and having won the Prince of Asturias Trophy two weeks ago on the same race course where the World Championship will be played, they are one of the teams that have the potential to fight for the leading positions.

"There will be many teams fighting to win and our goal is to try to be one of them. We have a very difficult race course, which will make the competition even more fun and entertaining," adds the Lanzarote native.

After the days of measuring and sealing of the equipment, this Monday will be the first contact on the race course with the celebration of the practice race, a training regatta.

An opportunity for the participants to measure themselves in the area where the races will take place from Tuesday onwards, and everything seems to indicate that the squall lashing the Rías Baixas this Sunday with rain and strong gusts from the south will give way to a calmer day, with conditions of light winds from the west during the afternoon.

The J80 World Championship, much more than a regatta

Among the almost 80 registered teams there are sailors from more than forty countries. Each and every one of them come to Baiona to enjoy not only the competition but also the rich heritage, gastronomy and scenery that Galicia offers throughout the year.

During the five days of the intercontinental event, the fleet will meet on the race course located in front of the natural paradise of the Cies Islands, while at the end of each day the activity will move to the village of Monte Real, where participants can enjoy the best local products from Galicia Calidade.

Galicia, the Rías Baixas and Baiona are ready to experience the most awaited nautical event of 2023.
